15:11
And he said, A certain man had two sons:

15:12
And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me . And he divided unto them his living.

15:13
And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.

15:14
And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

15:15
And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

15:16
And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

15:17
And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

15:18
我要起來,到我父親那裡去,向他說:父親!我得罪了天,又得罪了你;
I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

15:19
And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

15:20
And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

15:21
And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

15:22
父親卻吩咐僕人說:把那上好的袍子快拿出來給他穿;把戒指戴在他指頭上;把鞋穿在他腳上;
But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:

15:23
把那肥牛犢牽來宰了,我們可以吃喝快樂;
And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it ; and let us eat, and be merry:

15:24
For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

DEAF TO LOVE

"The younger son . . . set off . . . and . . . squandered his wealth in wild living." Luke 15:13

One day Jesus told this story about a young man who had lived at home all his life. He knew the house, its smells, and all its nooks. He knew a thousand things about his home. But he didn't want to stay. He didn't feel at home. So that young man did what some of us have done. He left to find his "real" home.

His leaving was an insult to his father. Even if a father in that culture signed over the rights to the family farm, he would still live off that farm until his death. But the young man couldn't wait. He asked, and amazingly received, what he had no right to until his father died. He was saying, "Dad, I can't wait to leave home until you die. I want my inheritance now."

With such a heartless rejection of his father, the young man left. He turned his back on his family and his community and left "for a distant country." He cut loose from the dull, familiar ways he knew. His leaving was more than disrespectful. It was a betrayal.

We understand. Many of us ache for something we cannot define. We seldom admit it, but every day we hear creative voices that call us to "a distant country." In the blaring confusion of voices in our heads, another voice, the silent, gentle whisper of God, calls us back.

God doesn't want another "hired servant." He wants each of us as his child.

PRAYER
Father, we are prone to wander. We are prone to live as hired people. Thank you for saving us to be your daughters and sons and to enjoy life with you forever. Through Jesus, Amen.
